ST. PAUL, Minn – Thursday afternoon the Minnesota Senate voted nearly unanimously to extend 26 weeks of unemployment benefits to Iron Range workers. Sen. David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm), chief author of the bill thanked his fellow Senate colleagues and encouraged the House to pass the same clean bill as soon as possible.
“This was an important step to getting badly needed unemployment benefits into the hands of unemployed Iron Range workers. Just the other day I heard a story from a woman who said she was going to have to declare bankruptcy soon. Her story is among a chorus of family stories that are really struggling. These benefits will keep food on the table and essential bills paid. I urge the House to follow suit with a bill that is not tied to lowering unemployment insurance rates for companies. There is a time and a place for that discussion, but it isn’t tied to this disaster relief for the Range,” said Sen. Tomassoni.
