Police-caused death investigation legislation moves forward

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed legislation that would lay out clear guidelines on how deaths caused by police activity are investigated. The bill would require the investigation be conducted by two investigators from an outside law enforcement agency, neither of which are employed by a department involved in the incident. When the investigation is complete, the report is delivered to the county attorney, at which point a determination is made if any charges will be brought. This bill does not forbid an internal investigation of the incident, and is supported by several law enforcement agencies.  (S.F. 466)
