SAINT PAUL – Sen. Greg Clausen (DFL – Apple Valley) issued the following statement regarding the death of George Floyd and the subsequent events in the Twin Cities:
“The last few days have been difficult for all of us. Our system of “law and order” failed George Floyd. Every Minnesotan should be outraged by the inequities and racism in our society.
My heart goes out to the Minnesotans whose communities have been devastated by the violence. There are families—including many families of color—who now have nowhere to buy groceries, whose jobs are gone, whose small businesses are burned. I am proud of our communities who are reaching out to assist with food, supplies, and helping our neighbors in Minneapolis and St. Paul clean up the neighborhoods that experienced the most trauma.
We must move quickly to determine the propriety of the actions of the officers involved in the death of George Floyd. This includes the need for fundamental change in this country to overcome the legacy of racial inequalities. I will continue working with my colleagues in the legislature and local community members to create that change to not only bring justice to George Floyd and other people of color, but find ways to protect all businesses and property.”
