Sen. John Marty Honored For Work to Prevent Sexual Assault

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sen. John Marty’s (DFL-Roseville) leadership in addressing sexual violence was honored at a Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault event last week where he received the 2015 AWARE Award. The Coalition praised Marty’s ongoing support for work addressing the prevention of sexual violence, including his legislation that became law last year that promoted community-based prevention grants. They applauded his “steadfast interest” in improving student access to comprehensive sexual health education.

“This award was given in the closing days of Sexual Assault Awareness Month – making it the perfect time to raise greater awareness about this very serious and heart wrenching problem that is tearing up families and causing pain in men and women,” said Sen. Marty

Last summer one of Sen. Marty’s constituents contacted his office about the insulting response from the Minnesota Board of Chiropractic Examiners after his daughter was sexually assaulted by her chiropractor. This contact led to several letters being exchanged by Sen. Marty and the Board, and the eventual request by Marty for the Board’s Executive Director to step down. Further action to remedy the board’s lack of leadership on this issue is ongoing.

“The inappropriate response from the MN Board of Chiropractic Examiners illustrates how much work we still have to do, to increase awareness about sexual assault and violence and how to prevent it,” said Marty. “I’m honored to receive this recognition and want to thank the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault for all of their work to help victims and educate Minnesotans about this serious issue.”
