ST. PAUL, Minn.–Sen. Kathy Sheran has been named chair of the Senate’s Health, Human Services and Housing Committee. Sen. Sheran was re-elected on Nov. 6 to her third term representing Senate District 19.
“The issues that confront the state in the areas of health, human services and housing will be a challenge to resolve, as we have yet to determine a balanced way to fund government responsibilities,” Sen. Sheran said.
The committee will handle all policy issues relating to health and human services and housing. Budget issues will be handled in a finance committee.
“With her health background, I know Sen. Sheran will do an outstanding job leading this committee,” said Senate Majority Leader-designate Tom Bakk. “I have always appreciated her insight and tenacity in dealing with health-related issues.”
Sen. Sheran noted that she is planning initiatives that she will focus on over the session, which begins Jan. 8.
“My initial goals are to inform ourselves of the necessary state actions to implement the Affordable Health Care Act, to review the legislative reports requested during the last session and to look at the next steps we must take to ensure health care is accessible and affordable, human services are delivered efficiently and adequate housing is available,” Sen. Sheran stated. “I hope that the people in my district will be ready and willing to come to the Capitol to discuss other related health, human services and housing issues.”
She added that she is looking forward to working in a bipartisan fashion with her DFL and GOP colleagues.
