Sen. Tomassoni Responds to Governor Dayton’s State of the State Address

ST. PAUL, Minn. – On Thursday evening, Governor Dayton delivered his fifth State of the State Address
to an enthusiastic crowd of legislators in the Minnesota House of Representatives Chamber. Governor
Dayton, still fresh off his recent re-election, spoke about how successful Minnesota is, and how fully
transformational its recovery has been since the days of recession and billion dollar deficits. Sen. David
Tomassoni echoed the Governor’s compliments on the state’s economic successes.
“Tonight the Governor painted a picture of just how far Minnesota has come in the five years since he
became governor. He also said that now is the time to act, and I couldn’t agree more with his vision for
the state,” said Tomassoni. “We have the rare opportunity to make bold investments in our state’s
infrastructure and education system, now is the time to lay the foundation for Minnesota’s future.”
In addition to touting the state’s economic achievements, Governor Dayton also talked about our state’s
education system. He said Minnesota has historically prided itself on making education a priority, but our
current level of investment isn’t stacking up nationally. The Governor said the answer is universal prekindergarten,
and giving all Minnesota students the best chance for success.
The Governor also mentioned job losses on the Iron Range, a fact Tomassoni appreciated.
“While the state of Minnesota is strong, the Iron Range has recently been dealt a severe blow with the
layoffs of 1100 workers in the iron mining industry. The Governor has been very supportive of the laid
off workers and I’m glad he is standing strong with the Range as we work to support the recently
unemployed,” said Tomassoni.
