Today, Senate DFL Leader Susan Kent released the following statement, following Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka’s press conference on the anticipated special session.
“Senator Gazelka’s call for the Governor to lift all safety measures put in place through his emergency powers are shortsighted. We are by no means out of the woods with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are simply better prepared as the Governor’s actions have bought our public health care network invaluable time to build capacity in response to a surge in cases and has protected Minnesotans across the state. We must continue reopening safely and thoughtfully instead of rushing to lift all safety measures and put Minnesotans at risk,” said Senate DFL Leader Susan Kent. “I share Senator Gazelka’s sentiment of working together to lead the nation in transforming our criminal justice system to work for and protect everyone. However, his suggestion at a slow and drawn-out legislative response is not only indicative of the reason we have not been able to pass transformative justice legislation in the past, but it is completely dismissive of the urgency to protect the Black community. If we are to lead the nation we must lead boldly and courageously, not gently and timidly.”
