Senate passes legislation to increase heating assistance funding

Senator Dan Sparks (DFL-Austin) voted today to increase funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to ensure the program can continue to operate though the end of winter. Freezing temperatures and increasing prices resulted in a need for additional energy assistance funding.

“Families across the state have been struggling to deal with the effects of the shortage and price spikes,” said Senator Sparks, who co-authored this emergency funding bill. “Hopefully this will provide some relief through the rest of this year’s cold weather months as we continue to work on the larger issue.”

With the LIHEAP program running out of funding, this legislation will provide an additional $20 million to the fund. Information about applying is available online at: or by calling 1-800-657-3710.
