Senator Kevin Dahle (DFL-Northfield) joined his Senate colleagues in a unanimous vote on the Senate floor to provide an additional $20 million to the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The long, cold winter and the implementation of additional energy assistance crisis funding for households using propane and heating oil has depleted the programs available funds. The legislation passed today should ensure that the funding will last through the rest of winter.
“I think the governor and the legislature did the right thing today in making sure that low income folks are getting the heat that they need this winter, but I also have a bill that provides additional consumer protection for folks that have to have propane,” said Sen. Dahle. “It’s a monopoly for most propane providers and the consumer doesn’t have a choice. So we have some safeguards that are long overdue.”
Sen. Dahle is authoring additional legislation this year that calls for transparency in propane pricing, makes budget payment plans available and sets a standard on minimum purchases.
