Senator Carlson Statement on Department of Human Rights Investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department

ST. PAUL, Minn. – On Tuesday, it was announced that the Minnesota Department of Human Rights filed a civil rights charge against the Minneapolis Police Department and would be investigating the department for systemic discrimination against people of color. In response Senator Jim Carlson (DFL-Eagan) released the following statement.

“The death of George Floyd at the hands of officers of the Minneapolis Police Department is only the latest in a line of incidents that reveal systemic issues in the MPD. Yesterday’s  announcement by the Department of Human Rights is a strong and necessary step towards accountability and addressing these problems. I applaud this decision as only the first step in a process of moving towards accountability, reform, and structural change. To repair the public trust, we must understand how it has been violated – and this investigation will begin that process.”
