Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) today blasted a new Supreme Court decision that fundamentally undermines the livelihoods of working men and women. The controversial and narrow 5-4 decision in the Janus v. AFSCME lawsuit means that police officers, teachers, nurses, corrections officers, child care providers, paramedics, sanitation workers, and other public employees have less power to collectively bargain for wages, benefits, and working conditions.
“People who are the beneficiaries of the union should in fact be a part of maintaining those benefits,” said Sen. Tomassoni. “The court’s decision is the latest attempt at busting public unions and will not serve people’s best interests nor will it be positive to the long-term security of workers, families, and future jobs. I am very disappointed with this latest anti-job ruling by SCOTUS and I’m very concerned about the direction this country is heading.”
