Senator Franzen responds to the ongoing violence in Washington D.C.

Earlier today, the United States Capitol building was breached by a violent mob, incited by President Trump, temporarily putting a halt to the certification of the results of the presidential election and leading to several arrests and injuries.

In response, Senate DFL Assistant Leader Melisa Franzen (DFL-Edina) released the following statement:

“The actions taken today are nothing short of an attempted “coup” to overturn the results of a free and fair election. The right to peaceful protest is protected, but an effort to seize illegitimate control of our country is not. Today’s events are an attack on our democracy and should be condemned and rejected by every citizen and elected official in our country. The peaceful transfer of power has been a foundation and hallmark of our presidential elections, and each of us must be committed to uphold this tradition.”
