In appreciation for her dedication towards the improvement of the I-494 corridor and the building of the 77th Street Underpass, Sen. Melissa Wiklund (DFL-Bloomington) was presented with the I-494 Corridor Commission Transportation Advocate Award today. The award, given by the I-494 Corridor Commission which includes members from Bloomington, Richfield, Edina, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka, recognized her “dedicated service to the effort to reduce congestion and more effectively and efficiently move people and goods along the I-494 Corridor.” Sen. Wiklund was joined by Representative Linda Slocum (DFL-Richfield) in receiving a Transportation Advocate Award.
This year’s bonding bill included $24.4 million in grants for local road improvement; Sen. Wiklund lobbied hard to have the 77th Street Underpass included in receiving funding from these highly competitive grants. Building the Underpass provides an essential link between the cities of Richfield and Bloomington, which will create better connections with the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the Metro Transit South Garage, and the Mall of America. This will facilitate economic development and strengthen the regional transportation network.
“Bonding allows us to address the nuts and bolts of our infrastructure, like our roads and bridges. This is a great investment by the state that will pay economic dividends now and down the road as well as easing the process of crossing Highway 77 for pedestrians, bikers and those not on the Interstate. I am grateful to have been recognized for securing funds for this important project, and am looking forward to seeing more support in the future for infrastructure improvements in our communities,” said Sen. Wiklund.
The 77th Street Underpass has been a needed project for more than 20 years, and this transportation grant will provide a substantial amount of the necessary funding towards final completion of the project.
