SAINT PAUL, Minn – State Senator Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park, released the following statement regarding state Representative Cal Bahr’s comments made during a gun rights advocate rally at the Capitol on Saturday.
“Recently, Rep. Cal Bahr made incendiary comments to a rally of gun rights advocates, explicitly calling for his audience of armed citizens to commit physical violence against their political opponents. Just as distressing, the crowd cheered his call to violence and the Facebook streaming audio reflected many ‘likes’. Rep. Bahr’s rhetoric endangers law abiding persons, and a gun in the hands of a person who feels this way or speaks this way is a potential menace to everyone. Yet, I know that his violent call is not shared by most gun owners, no matter their position on the merits of the proposals to reduce gun violence by removing guns from imminently dangerous people and screening buyers for disqualifying backgrounds. I also know that his views and those of the several hundred people at the rally opposing these measures are not shared by the robust majority of gun owners themselves, who support these reasonable bills that would make it harder for dangerous people to get and keep their hand on guns. I look forward to continued conversations with all advocates, on both sides of this issue, and trust that on this issue, the majority in Minnesota will prevail.”
