St. Paul receives $25 million for regional ballpark

State Sen. Sandy Pappas, DFL-St. Paul, joined St. Paul city officials, the Port Authority, the St. Paul Chamber, members of the St. Paul Saints, and other lawmakers on Thursday to celebrate the soon-to-be-built St. Paul Regional Ballpark. Earlier in the day, Gov. Mark Dayton announced nine projects around the state that will share $47.5 million of bonding proceeds – the new ballpark in the Lowertown area of downtown St. Paul will receive $25 million of that funding.
“This is a project that has been in the works for several years and I’m extremely pleased that funding is now in place for the project to move forward,” said Sen. Pappas. “This is a smart investment in St. Paul’s future. The new ballpark will create new jobs and spur economic development in downtown St. Paul.”
The proposed regional ballpark project is estimated to cost $54 million. In addition to the $25 million received in state funds, the remaining cost will be paid for through a combination of city and team funds. The 7,000-seat facility will be used for minor league professional baseball as well as amateur sports and recreation opportunities, including high school and American Legion games.
The new city-owned facility is expected to create 225 construction jobs, 23 full-time jobs and hundreds of seasonal jobs as well as generate $10 million annually in economic growth from over 400,000 visitors it will bring to St. Paul each year.
The celebration of the new ballpark continues on Saturday, September 22, from Noon to 2:00 p.m. when there will be a Popcorn and Pop Flies community celebration at Mears Park. Community members are invited to enjoy free popcorn from the St. Paul Saints and take part in a game of wiffle ball.
