State economist warns against an all-cuts budget solution
“Since the moment Gov. Dayton put his budget on the table, Republican leaders have attacked the Governor for proposing so-called “job-killing” tax increases. Today, that rhetoric was met with a sharp dose of reality.
State Economist Tom Stinson was clear in stating that the all-cuts budget proposed by Republicans will do more harm to our fragile economic recovery than the balanced approach proposed by Governor Dayton. This should be sobering news for the Republican majority who continue to chant their mantra of “no new taxes.”
Gov. Dayton has put a balanced budget solution on the table that invests in education and protects the pocketbooks of middle-class Minnesotans. These are the right priorities for our state, and will position Minnesota for long-term economic success as we emerge from this difficult recession.
The Republicans all-cuts budget will force more layoffs and will increase property taxes on every homeowner, renter, and business in the state. I hope that the warning delivered today by Mr. Stinson will force them to rethink this short-sighted strategy.”
