2014 State Legislative Session Convenes

The Minnesota State Legislative Session has officially begun. As Sen. Vicki Jensen (DFL-Owatonna) heads into the second year of her first term, she is looking forward to the beginning of a session with a full year of legislative experience.

“I have a much better understanding of what’s possible and what I need to do to get things done,” said Sen. Jensen. “I’m anxious to get started and that’s why today is such a great day.”

One of the Legislature’s main topics this session will be on state bonding projects. Sen. Jensen will work on legislation to fund a needed dormitory at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf and funding for a Greater Minnesota grant program.

Beyond bonding, Sen. Jensen stated that her priorities include filling the donut-hole in location equity, addressing issues of insurance fraud to protect consumers from higher premiums, and expanding broadband internet access across Greater Minnesota. She will also focus on a number of tax reform changes, including the farm equipment repair tax and business-to-business taxes.

“This interim, I spent a lot of time listening to families and businesses in our area to understand what they thought about last session and what direction they would like the Legislature to go next,” said Sen. Jensen. “I heard a lot about how what we did last session was really good and what needed to be tweaked a little bit. Some of the things that happened, like business-to-business taxes and the impact of that on our community.”

Sen. Jensen encourages constituents to contact her with any questions, comments or concerns on any legislative topic via phone or email. Her office can be reached by phone at 651-296-9457 or by email at sen.vicki.jensen@senate.mn.
