Statement from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On Thursday, Vance Boelter was sentenced to two life sentences followed by 40 years in prison in federal court, following his guilty plea for first-degree murder in the assassination of Melissa and Mark Hortman and attempted first-degree murder in the attack on Senator John Hoffman, his wife Yvette and daughter Hope.

Senator Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) released the following statement:

“I am relieved to see one element of resolution and accountability for this attack that took the lives of my friends, the Hortmans, and put the Hoffman family through the unimaginable.  Thank you to the diligent investigators and prosecutors who brought this case to a decisive federal conclusion. Their work has cleared up misinformation and eliminated doubt about these tragic events. I hope this day brings a small amount of solace to Sophie and Colin Hortman and to John, Yvette and Hope Hoffman, whose courage and humanity continue to shine through in times of pain and darkness.”

Boelter also faces state charges brought by the Hennepin County Attorney, including premeditated murder, attempted murder and animal cruelty.
