This bill gives school districts more flexibility by allowing them to provide hiring bonuses to teachers who are hired in hard-to-staff subject areas, school settings, or in geographically isolated districts. The bill only applies to districts who currently have an alternative teacher professional pay system (Q-Comp) in place.
This legislation gives school districts an additional tool to help entice new teachers to move to a district, and can be especially beneficial in filling hard-to-staff subject areas or in very small and remote districts. The bill was heard in the Senate E-12 Finance Committee this week and was laid over for possible inclusion in the Omnibus Finance Bill. (S.F. 1498)
