DFL Legislators, Housing Advocates emphasize the need for an Eviction Moratorium Off-Ramp

Today, DFL Legislators were joined by local officials and housing advocates to emphasize the dire need for a suitable off-ramp for the current eviction moratorium. As budget negotiations continue, DFL legislators are proposing an orderly transition away from the eviction moratorium that would prevent a wave of evictions while ensuring landlords are made whole for rent that is owed to them.

Members of the Senate DFL support POCI Caucus

On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Daunte Wright was killed by Brooklyn Center police. In response to this devastating event, Senators Isaacson, Wiklund, Johnson Stewart, Eaton, Pappas, Putnam, Dziedzic, Dibble, Carlson, Port, Murphy, Klein, McEwen, Kent, Cwodzinski, Wiger, and Marty release the following statement in support of the Minnesota Senate’s People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus members:

Eviction moratorium phase out

The Senate passed Senate File 1470 yesterday on the floor. The bill clarifies that currently Minnesotans can be evicted in certain circumstances including criminal activity involving illegal guns, material lease violations, and endangering the health and safety of others. It also sets a time frame when someone can be evicted due to nonpayment of rent, but it prohibits those evictions if the tenant has an open application for rental assistance. The bill does not address those in mortgage forbearance, but the American Rescue Plan does provide some relief for those households.
