Bakk statement in support of Latz amendments

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — State Sen. Ron Latz today announced his intention to offer two amendments to the omnibus finance bill on the Senate floor Thursday. Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, released the following statement in support of these proposals.

“I wrote a letter asking for public hearings on these bills more than a month ago. Unfortunately, the Senate majority decided not to listen and they left Senator Latz with no other option than to offer his proposals as amendments on the floor.

“There is no question the extreme risk protection order proposal will save lives. Red Flag laws like this make it harder for people who intend to die by suicide to get guns, which lowers the chances families will have to grieve those losses. I also appreciate Sen. Latz’s proposal to extend background checks with a five-year permit to purchase system.

“I intend to urge my colleagues to join me in supporting both amendments.”
