Bill to protect renters from fires heard in committee

A bill heard in the Housing Committee this week would provide grants to nonprofit organizations for installing sprinklers in apartments with tenants with low income.

The proposal is meant to encourage nonprofits to install sprinklers in multifloored buildings with residential occupancy. Testimony from professional groups stated that sprinklers in apartments will save lives in the event of a fire. This is especially true of the tragic fire that occurred in 2019 at the Cedar High apartments in Minneapolis. (SF 4170)
