Bipartisan bill aims to expand apprenticeship program; benefits employers and Minnesota workers

ST. PAUL, Minn – Connecting workers interested in a career in manufacturing or other high-growth industry to an employer who can train them, is the aim of the PIPELINE program – a public-private partnership currently in its fourth year. Sen. Matt Little (DFL-Lakeville) is a co-author of a bill that funds the PIPELINE apprenticeship program.

The earn-as-you-learn approach benefits employers and workers in high-demand job sectors like advanced manufacturing, health care services, agriculture and information technology. Sen. Little says he’s supporting the bipartisan legislation to assist two growing industrial parks in his district.

“Both Lakeville and Farmington have large industrial parks which have struggled to recruit qualified workers. By supporting the PIPELINE Project, we’re helping these companies find interested workers and we’re helping address the skills gap shortage across Minnesota. The economic vitality of many communities, including the south metro, hinges on the success of local businesses – which means it is in our best interest to connect employers and workers through this bipartisan public-private partnership,” said Sen. Little.

The program attempts to achieve three main objectives:

  • engage employers, educators, labor and public agencies to support employment-based education;
  • enhance Minnesota’s skilled workforce; and
  • expand dual-training and registered apprenticeship in Minnesota

The bill aims to invest $1 million into the PIPELINE project over the next two years.

Matt Little represents Senate District 58, which covers Lakeville, Farmington, a small slice of Northfield and more than a dozen townships and small communities including Empire, Vermillion, New Trier and Douglas.
