Children and Firefighter Health Protection Act

Flame retardants, many of which are carcinogenic, are found in upholstered furniture and children’s products, but recent research shows they are ineffective, and pose a health hazard especially to firefighters. The Children and Firefighter Health Protection Act phases out the manufacture, sale, and distribution of children’s products, upholstered residential furniture, carpet and carpet pads, and mattresses that contain flame-retardant chemicals in amounts greater than 1000 parts per million. The bill also requires that replacement chemicals do not pose a health hazard. This bill passed the Senate Floor this week. (S.F. 1215)
