DFL bill would honor fallen Minnesota war hero

Senate DFLers advanced legislation in the Veterans and Military Affairs committee this week that would dedicate the Wentworth bridge on U.S. Highway 52 in West Saint Paul to Private Joseph Marthaler. A native Minnesotan, Private Joseph Marthaler grew up on a farm in West Saint Paul close to the Wentworth bridge.

Private Joseph Marthaler served in the 26th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division. Enlisting when he was 19, he was killed in action on February 20, 1945 during the battle of Iwo Jima. If passed, the bridge would be dedicated as the “Private Joseph Marthaler Memorial bridge.”

Ensuring Minnesota’s heroes are remembered and honored for their sacrifices will always be a priority for Senate DFLers. (SF 44)
