Legislation authored by Senator Mohamed and Senator Champion to Restore Freedom to Drive Passes in Senate Finance Committee and Advances to Senate Floor
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Senate Finance Committee passed Driver’s Licenses for All (HF 4) on Thursday and referred the bill to the floor of the Senate. After the legislation was approved by the committee, the authors of the bill released the following statement:
“I am ecstatic,” said Senator Zaynab Mohamed (DFL — Minneapolis), the lead author of the bill in the Minnesota Senate. “I’m grateful to the members of the Finance Committee for taking this work seriously and moving to restore the freedom to drive. I’m committed to continuing to do this work until we pass the bill on the Senate floor and it becomes law. I want to thank the brave coalition of immigrants and supporters who have shown up to every committee hearing in both the House and Senate throughout this entire process. We are determined to get this done for them, because every Minnesotan deserves to live with dignity.”
“I am excited that we are one step closer to making our dreams a reality and our dream is to make sure that all Minnesotans have an opportunity to drive,” said Senate President Bobby Joe Champion (DFL – Minneapolis), a co-author of the bill who successfully led the effort to pass similar legislation in the Senate in previous years. “So after this vote here in the Finance Committee, we are headed to the floor and we’re looking forward to a robust debate. At the end of the day, we’re focused on getting the necessary votes in order to pass this bill and send it on to the governor.”
