ST. PAUL, MINN – Moving testimony is expected from 96-year-old Christeen Stone of Maplewood in the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee this Thursday, Feb. 2. Ms. Stone has been invited to testify on S.F. 205 by the chief author of the bill, Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL-Maplewood). The bill calls for a property tax exemption for the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran or service member who dies due to a service-related cause; up to $300,000 market value.
Stone’s husband fought in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, and it was at that battle where he was injured, ending his days on the battlefield. When Stone’s husband passed away at the age of 98, she lost all of his veteran’s benefits. She has testified in the past about how helpful property tax credits are for people like her.
Sen. Wiger says the primary reason for the bill is to provide property tax relief for disabled veterans, their surviving spouses and primary family caregivers. All members of the media are invited to attend the hearing, taking place at the following location:
