Senator Champion bill for workforce training and entrepreneurship investments for Minnesotans of color to be heard in Senate Jobs Committee

March 22, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The Senate Jobs and Economic Growth Finance and Policy Committee will hear legislation (SF 2150) from Senator Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis) today at 3:00 p.m. to fund workforce training and business development organizations with a focus on black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). The bill provides $10,800,000 per year from the Workforce Development Fund and $2,375,000 in 2022 and $875,000 in 2023 from the General Fund. The hearing will be streamed live here.

“For Minnesota’s BIPOC communities, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have only grown the already wide gaps in income and wealth that were present throughout our state, where we already have the second biggest income inequality gap between whites and blacks,” said Senator Champion. “This legislation  provides funding and workforce development grants to those organizations who are best adept at helping our BIPOC communities, and while we have a long way to go, these are a critical first step.”
