For many Minnesotans, the only barrier to steady employment is the lack of a reliable ride to work. This is particularly troubling for areas of Greater Minnesota where public transportation is limited. The “Getting to Work” bill provides grants to nonprofit organizations helping disadvantaged Minnesotans buy and maintain a vehicle.
The program consists of a competitive grant process administered by DEED to nonprofits offering low interest vehicle loans and affordable repairs. The nonprofits must also offer financial literacy education and credit counseling. Thirty four counties are currently served by such organizations, and this bill would allow those with a track record of success to expand services to unserved areas across the state. (S.F. 641)
