Governor Walz requests additional funding for the Minnesota Zoo

This week, Governor Walz requested an additional $6 million supplemental budget appropriation to sustain the Minnesota Zoo during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Zoo relies on earned income for two-thirds of its operating budget, but with the closure of the Zoo during the COVID-19 outbreak and anticipated lower revenues due to continued social distancing, an additional appropriation is necessary to ensure animal care continues in specialized facilities. Beyond being a great attraction for Minnesotans to go and learn more about animals in a safe and fun environment, the Minnesota Zoo is also essential for animal rehabilitation, wildlife preservation, and promoting education of species that are possibly overlooked by most people. The money would be essential to ensure the zoo can continue these activities during and after the pandemic.
