Governor’s budget supports farmers

The Senate Agriculture Committee heard the governor’s supplemental budget recommendations for agriculture earlier this week.

Included in the recommendations were strong investments in the state’s farmers, including $2 million for emerging farmers, $1.5 million for Minnesota’s farmers markets, $1.5 million for the agricultural emergency account, and more.

The recommendations also include $3 million for Second Harvest Heartland, which works to end hunger through community partnerships. The organization taps into new sources of food, including from our farmers, to help feed Minnesota.

An agriculture omnibus bill is expected to be heard in committee soon, possibly as soon as next week. It remains to be seen whether Senate Republicans will include any of the governor’s recommendations in the omnibus. Senate DFLers will continue to fight for Minnesota’s farmers as session moves forward. (SF 4019)
