Governor’s jobs and labor budget presented, would include Paid Family and Medical Leave for Minnesotans

Governor Walz’s budget proposal for the Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Department of Labor was presented this week. Some of the funding priorities included technical assistance to small businesses, job training, fee reductions, and childcare development grants.

In addition to funding, the proposal also included several important policy changes as well. This includes Paid Family and Medical Leave for Minnesotans. The program would be funded as part of a payroll tax, which would fund 12 weeks of paid time off for Minnesotans for a new child, their own healthcare needs, or to take care of a sick family member. The proposal also includes expanding access to pregnancy and parental leave as well as improved protections for nursing or lactating mothers when they are working. (SF 1098)
