Hauschild Secures over $50 Million for Iron Range Schools, Infrastructure Projects, and Local Government Aid

SAINT PAUL, Minn.  Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL—Hermantown) announced Monday evening that he delivered a total of $50,645,164 for Northern Saint Louis County in the FY 24-25 state budget. 

“I’m proud to have delivered for both our youngest and our wisest Minnesotans this legislative session,” said Senator Hauschild. “We are making historic investments in education this year, and I’m proud to have secured $750,000 for direct support to the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely through the tax bill, as well as $300 million for struggling nursing homes across Minnesota to ensure their long term viability.” 

Senator Hauschild said he delivered funding for the following projects in Northern St. Louis County:

  • $4 Million for Ely Public Schools through the IRRRB 
  • $300,000 to Veterans on the Lake Resort
  • $200,000 to the City of Babbitt for city infrastructure
  • $830,000 in Construction materials tax exemptions for Ely, North Lights Academy, and Duluth Schools
  • $750,000 to the Boundary Waters Care Center for capital equipment purchases
  • $650,000 for wastewater upgrades at the North Woods School
  • $2,000,000 Bond for Babbitt water, sewer and utility improvements 
  • $1,750,000 Bond for Hoyt Lakes Community Recreation and Wellness Center improvements
  • $3,633,000 Bond for Vermillion Community College
  • $11 Million for several infrastructure improvements at the Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park
  • $1.3 Million bond for St. Louis County ATV trail system improvements

As the only freshman member of the Taxes Committee, Hauschild worked diligently and in a bipartisan fashion to secure increased levels of County Program Aid (CPA), Local Government Aid (LGA), Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT), and public safety funding in an effort to reduce property taxes for hardworking Minnesotans. 

  • St. Louis County CPA: $17,548,243 ($4,121,720 increase)
  • City of Babbitt LGA: $530,686 ($35,948 increase)
  • City of Cook LGA: $180,628 ($9,258 increase)
  • City of Ely LGA: $2,817,133 ($256,985 increase)
  • City of Hoyt Lakes LGA: $525,250 ($79,196 increase)
  • City of Tower LGA: $114,411 ($10,666 increase)
  • City of Winton LGA: $38,408 ($5,582 increase)
  • St. Louis County PILT increase: $2,130,167
  • City of Babbitt Public Safety Aid: $60,564
  • City of Cook Public Safety Aid: $23,499
  • City of Ely Public Safety Aid: $140,427
  • Hoyt Lake Public Safety Aid: $87,652
  • Orr Public Safety Aid: $9,146
  • Tower Public Safety Aid: $18,642
  • Winton Public Safety Aid: $7,308
  • St. Louis County Public Safety Aid: $3,423,415
