High school students stage sit-in at the Capitol for gun violence prevention

A group of high school students organized a sit in this week at a Republican Senator’s office to call for stricter gun laws. Although the Republican lawmaker briefly met with the students, the senator dismissed the opportunity for gun safety bills to be heard at a public safety committee meeting – saying this session is focused on school security improvements, not gun restrictions.

The student protesters were not satisfied with the lawmaker’s response. They contend that school security and gun violence prevention issues are intertwined and should not be separated. Later that day, the students disrupted a Senate committee with an ask to please hear commonsense gun safety bills. The committee recessed and the students were escorted out.
