Senator John A. Hoffman was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2012 and was re-elected by his community in 2016, 2020, and 2022. He represents Senate District 34, which includes Champlin and portions of Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids, Dayton, and Rogers in Anoka, Hennepin and Wright Counties.

Senator Hoffman chairs the Senate Human Services Committee, where he oversees policy and funding for services that support older adults, people with disabilities, children, caregivers, and families throughout Minnesota. Known for his bipartisan and pragmatic approach, he works to improve access to care, strengthen community-based services, support the human-services workforce, and ensure accountability and innovation across Minnesota’s human-services system.

He also serves on the Senate Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate Committee and the Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee.

Before his election to the Senate, Senator Hoffman worked with children, families, and people with disabilities across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. He also served as Vice Chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, representing Minnesota’s largest school district. Prior to that he served on the Federal Interagency Coordinating Council where he advised Federal Cabinet members on their collective roles regarding children and families birth to 8. His professional and public-service experience has shaped his longstanding commitment to ensuring that public policy responds to the unique needs of each person and family.

In 2025, Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, survived a targeted act of political violence at their Champlin home. Their survival and recovery have deepened his commitment to public service, civility, public safety, and strengthening our democracy.

Senator Hoffman lives in Champlin with Yvette and their daughter. He remains deeply engaged in the communities he represents and continues to approach public service with a belief in governance over grievance, bipartisan cooperation, and a government that protects the dignity of every Minnesotan.
