Immigrant Rights Violated in Minnesota

ST. PAUL, MINN. – Human rights advocates released a report titled Moving from Exclusion to Belonging: Immigrant Rights in Minnesota Today which shows the struggles immigrants and people refugees face in Minnesota today. Minnesota is currently suffering from some of the nation’s worst racial disparities in the areas of employment, health, civic engagement, and educational outcomes. State Senator Patricia Torres Ray (DFL-Minneapolis) praised the report for not only highlighting the current challenges these communities face, but by identifying ways to address these issues.

“I really value The Advocates for Human Rights for their thorough review of state, federal and international human rights law that identifies what is working, what is not working and what are the gaps that exist in public policy,” said Sen. Torres Ray. “We must do everything we can at the state level to put forward smart policy that addresses the social justice issues our immigrants and refugees face.”

The report details many of the challenges that are facing immigrants today. The report cites discrimination, exclusion and fear, education policy that creates barriers, issues of public safety and access to justice as issues that make life for immigrants in Minnesota difficult. Now that the report has been released, it is time for legislators to get to work on fixing these problems.

“We have a responsibility as legislators to address these critical issues in a way that can break down structural barriers and give these communities the necessary support they need. I will work along with my colleagues to make this state a more welcoming and inclusive one for every person,” said Torres Ray.
