Legislators Honor Fallen First Responders on Anniversary of Burnsville Shooting

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Today, the Burnsville community marks one year since the loss of three first responders who were fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call in the early morning of February 18, 2024.

Senator Lindsey Port (DFL-Burnsville), Senator Jim Carlson (DFL-Eagan), Representative Jessica Hanson (DFL-Burnsville) and Representative Liz Reyer (DFL-Eagan) release the following statement:

“In the year since Burnsville lost Officer Paul Elmstrand, Officer Matthew Ruge and Firefighter Adam Finseth, their absence has been felt every day by family, friends, and the community they worked so bravely to protect. They embodied the highest ideals of service: courage, compassion and integrity. Today, we grieve their loss and celebrate the lives they lived. Our city is strong because of the people who live here — people who care for and support each other. We are resilient, and as we continue to heal, we honor not just the heroes we lost, but the ones who protect and serve us today.”

The community is invited to pay their respects at Burnsville City Hall (100 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville), where three memorial wreaths are on display for 24 hours. City leadership will give remarks today at 2 p.m. to honor the responders and give thanks for Burnsville’s community for their care and support.
