On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Daunte Wright was killed by Brooklyn Center police. In response to this devastating event, Senators Isaacson, Wiklund, Johnson Stewart, Eaton, Pappas, Putnam, Dziedzic, Dibble, Carlson, Port, Murphy, Klein, McEwen, Kent, Cwodzinski, Wiger, and Marty release the following statement in support of the Minnesota Senate’s People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus members:
“Our hearts go out to the Black community and all Minnesotans who have to relive the trauma of another friend, family, and community members’ death at the hands of police. Less than a year ago, members of the DFL POCI caucus came together in the wake of the murder of George Floyd to propose legislation that would transform our failed criminal justice system. Many of them were told to wait – wait for us to hold police accountable, wait for us to ensure public safety for all, and wait for us as we educate, learn and grow about the marginalization and violence Black people face. As we waited for the legislative process to take its course, another Black Minnesotan was killed by police. Our state can’t wait any longer. We must take action.”
“We support our BIPOC members and their vision for transforming Minnesota’s criminal justice system. We need to pause, listen, amplify, and follow the lead of those that fall victim to this broken system – and we have to do it now. We are proud to stand with the Senate POCI Caucus members to demand that the Minnesota Legislature takes urgent action to implement the additional reforms that were promised last year.”
