Senate Resolution Calls President’s Action a Betrayal of Law Enforcement Community in Minnesota, Across the Country
(ST. PAUL, Minn) – Following hours of debate in two Senate Floor sessions the Minnesota Senate passed Senate Resolution 15 Tuesday, a resolution authored by Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park) condemning President Trump’s pardon of criminal participants of the January 6 insurrection. The resolution passed 34-22, with unanimous DFL support. Ten Republican Senators were absent from Tuesday’s vote.
The January 6 insurrection injured more than 140 police officers in what U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves for the District of Columbia called the largest single-day, mass assault of law enforcement officers in our nation’s history. Shortly after being sworn in for his second term, President Trump granted “a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all other individuals convicted of offenses” related to the attack on our democracy on January 6, 2021.
“In one of his first official acts after returning to power, President Trump issued pardons to the approximately 1,500 people convicted of crimes related to the January 6 attack on our Capitol,” said Sen. Latz. “We have a duty to show leadership, shape public opinion and defend our democracy, not just remain silently on the sidelines while our country’s leader undermines our law enforcement and jeopardizes the very foundation of our country. This pardon was a blatant abuse of presidential power, a betrayal of our law enforcement community, an insult to our Constitution and completely unacceptable.”
Following Tuesday’s passage, a copy of Senate Resolution 15 will be transmitted to Governor Walz and President Trump.
