The mobile food shelf bill would provide start-up funds to local food shelves to start mobile food shelves. Mobile food shelf programs increase access to free and nutritious food for individuals who usually do not have access. In communities like St. Paul’s East Side, there are “food deserts,” where access to healthy food is a challenge. There are currently just nine mobile food shelf providers distributing more than 800,000 pounds of food to over 40,000 people across the state.
There was extensive discussion regarding the geographic distribution of the funds, and the bill was amended and passed on a unanimous voice vote to be laid over for possible inclusion in the omnibus bill. (S.F. 513)
