President Bobby Joe Champion Backs Senate Passage of Comprehensive Gun Violence Prevention Bill

Senator Coauthored Measure that Keeps the Most-Dangerous Weapons Off the Streets, Protects Schools and invests in Mental Health

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – President Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis), said today that he strongly backed Senate passage of a comprehensive gun-violence-prevention bill that he coauthored, saying it will protect Minnesota Schools and children, invest in mental health intervention and prevention, and it will keep the most dangerous weapons off the street.

“I coauthored this historic legislation because it will protect the lives of Minnesotans and help prevent tragedies like the shootings at Annunciation Church School last year, the killings of innocent Minnesotans by Federal ICE agents in January and the attacks of last June 14 that took the lives of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, as well as the shooting of my Senate colleague John Hoffman, his wife Yvette and his daughter Hope,” said Senator Champion.  The bill we passed today will protect our schools and our children, it will invest in mental health intervention and prevention, and it will keep the most dangerous weapons off our streets.  I’m very proud to have supported this Senate legislation today that will save lives across our state.  I hope the House will also act to keep Minnesotans safe and pass this important legislation.”
