State Senator Tom Saxhaug is a strong supporter of the $189 million Disaster Assistance Bill that the Governor proposed last week. Included in the proposal is over $2 million to assist in the reforestation efforts in Beltrami, Cass and Itasca Counties and to help make up for lost revenue from the salvage timber sales due to the recent wind storm on July 2nd. The Governor is working with the legislature to call a special session in the near future.
Also included in the bill is a $5.8 million appropriation for Public Safety Grants. The funds will be used to cover 100% of the match required for eligible applicants to receive federal disaster assistance in the counties affected by the blow-down.
“I am glad the conversations I had with the Governor’s office helped bring to light the need for this reforestation funding. I am thankful that the Governor included it in his proposal,” said Senator Saxhaug. “I also urge the Governor to stand firm against any reductions, particularly the forestry section of the bill.”
