Saxhaug thankful for Special Session funding for reforestation and public safety

Today the Legislature met in Special Session and approved disaster relief for northern Minnesota. Included in the $167 million package is over $2 million to assist in the reforestation efforts for the Leech Lake Reservation, Beltrami, Cass and Itasca Counties and to help make up for lost revenue from the salvage timber sales due to the recent wind storm on July 2nd. “All of the Counties affected by the blow-down did a fantastic job of supplying the necessary information to get this appropriation included in the bill,” said Senator Saxhaug. “I am thankful for their hard work and glad that I was able to help make sure that information got to the Governor and he included it in his proposal.”

Also included in the bill is a $5.8 million appropriation for Public Safety Grants. The money will be used to cover 100% of the match required for eligible applicants to receive federal disaster assistance in the counties affected by the blow-down.

“This funding is critical for our communities to recover from the storm this summer,” said Senator Saxhaug. “While the final package was smaller than the Governor’s original proposal, I am happy that there were no reductions to the forestry and public safety portions of the bill for the Leech Lake Reservation, Beltrami, Cass and Itasca Counties.”
