ST. PAUL, Minn. – This weekend, Americans are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. On July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the law that gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion.The bill also assures equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities to access a broad range of public and private services.
“Because of this historic law, millions of people with disabilities across this county now have better access to business, buildings, state and local government programs and services as well as better opportunities for employment. It’s not too large of a statement to say, the ADA was a life changer for people with disabilities.
“The ADA became law before my daughter Hope was born. As a parent, I am so grateful to its existence because it means my daughter has the same access to opportunities as all of her peers. The ADA paved the way for us to begin work on the Olmstead Plan, creating individualized housing options, employment options and a myriad of other consumer options for people with disabilities. We’ve come a long way on this issue – but we still have so much work left to do, because this is about ensuring everyone has the best quality of life possible,” said Sen. John Hoffman (DFL-Champlin).
