DULUTH, Minn. — Senate Labor Committee Chair Senator Jen McEwen (DFL-Duluth) is speaking out in support of health care workers in the wake of a report from Columbia Labor Lab that highlights the prevalence of union busting in nursing home settings. Some of the employers identified in the report are recipients of significant public funding.
“Nursing home workers do some of the most critical work in our society, yet they are underpaid, overworked and undervalued. The fact that some of these institutions are pleading for more public funding from the Legislature and turning around to spend significant portions of their budget on union busting is disgusting. No matter what some of these institutions tell their workers, their residents, or the public, this behavior shows where their priorities lie: their bottom line. Nursing home workers should be paid fairly and given the respect they deserve, and public dollars should never be used to threaten organized labor. I applaud every nursing home worker — union or not — for resisting these tactics, all while continuing to provide the best quality of care for our elders.”
