ST. PAUL, Minn.–Senate Majority Leader-designate Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, announced last week the Minnesota Senate committee structure and standing committee meeting schedule for the 2013-2014 Legislative Session. Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, DFL-Minneapolis, was named chair of the Senate Education Committee.
“Our schools are facing many challenges that demand comprehensive education reform,” said Sen. Bakk. “I’m confident that Sen. Torres Ray will work tirelessly as the Senate Education Chair to focus on improving student achievement, and give our school districts the tools they need to reach the highest standards of excellence for all children.”
The Education Committee reviews all legislation relating to education, children, and libraries. The committee also covers child abuse victim services, community education programs, and English as a second language programs. The Education Committee will meet in Room 112 of the Capitol on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2:30 p.m.
“I am truly honored to have the opportunity to serve Minnesotans in my new role as Education Committee chair,” said Sen. Torres Ray. “Education has always been a top priority of mine and I’ll continue to work hard at the Capitol on behalf of all of our students, children and communities.”
The 2013 Legislative Session will convene at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at which time the new Senate Majority Caucus leaders and committee chairs will officially assume office.
