City of Hastings seeking $1.5 million in bonding
SAINT PAUL, Minn – Hastings city leaders are looking forward to sharing their vision to enhance the Mississippi riverfront with the Minnesota Senate Bonding Committee next week. Sen. Katie Sieben (DFL-Cottage Grove), who sits on the Senate Capital Investment Committee, says the Hastings Riverfront Renaissance project is nearing the final phase, and the city is seeking state bonding dollars to help finish the project. Sen. Sieben and Rep. Denny McNamara (R-Hastings) are planning to author the $1.5 million bonding request for the City of Hastings, which will be considered during the 2016 Legislative Session.
“This bonding request will help the city finish its renovation of the riverfront area. The Riverfront Renaissance Project seeks to attract visitors to downtown, and at completion will include a new pavilion, trails, and an ice skating rink. This final stage of the project will bring infrastructure improvements, such as LED lighting to reduce energy consumption,” said Sen. Sieben. “It will be a wonderful gathering space for the Hastings community and the surrounding area.”
Sieben also notes the project has regional significance and will help draw visitors to the city, increasing economic development in the community. This impact is also highlighted by Hastings City Council member Danna Elling Schultz.
“For too long, Hastings has put its back to the Mississippi River,” said Elling Schultz. “With the Riverfront Renaissance, we are opening up our community to enjoy the natural of this magnificent natural resource. The project also helps us tie in with our new river bridge, the redevelopment of the old Hudson Manufacturing property on the west end of downtown, and the construction of the ArtSpace housing development on the east end. We very much look forward to the Senate committee’s visit.”
The Senate Bonding Committee will visit Hastings on December 2, arriving downtown around 4:15 p.m. to tour the riverfront project. Members of the media are invited to attend.
