Senate DFL Leader Susan Kent Responds to the Senate Republican Move to Hire Outside Counsel Funded by Extreme Organization

SAINT PAUL, MN— This evening, the Minnesota Senate Rules Committee convened to consider a resolution that would allow the Senate to hire an outside law firm for the purpose of intervening in the Ramsey County court case of Dr. Jane Doe vs. the State of Minnesota. Senate Republicans revealed the costs of hiring outside legal counsel would be covered by an extreme, anti-abortion organization, Life Legal Defense Foundation. The state of Minnesota already has legal counsel in this lawsuit, the Attorney General of Minnesota. The resolution brought forward passed on a party line vote. After the hearing, Senator Susan Kent released the following statement:

“Senate Republicans want an extreme, anti-abortion organization to pay the bills for an outside law firm to intervene in a lawsuit we’re not even involved in. The Attorney General will do his job and we should let him. This is not within the legislature’s purview and the Minnesota Senate is not for sale,” said Senate DFL Leader Susan Kent. “We’re not a party to the lawsuit and there is likely no precedent for this extremely political maneuver by Senate Republicans. They are attempting to criticize the Attorney General in order to align themselves with those who share their ideological stance to represent the state in this case.”
