Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy Says Senate Confirms Matt Varilek as DEED Commissioner

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) said today the Senate has unanimously confirmed Matt Varilek as Commissioner of the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).

“Matt Varilek has already shown he has the experience, understanding and the talent to lead this important agency, which does so much to support Minnesota businesses, expand economic development, and ensure a strong workforce,” said Majority Leader Murphy.  “Since he was appointed to lead the agency, he has shown he understands how important DEED’s work is to moving our economy forward and helping our communities and workforce thrive.”

“Commissioner Varilek has the relationships, values, and work ethic to make him a great leader of DEED,” said Senator Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis), chair of the Senate Jobs and Economic Development Committee. “His connections in Greater Minnesota and with small business entrepreneurs will help the department foster economic growth in our cities, regional centers, and small towns. His appointment was not only bipartisan, but unanimous, further evidence of the connections Commissioner Varilek has already made across the state.”  

Commissioner Varilek previously served as President of the Little Falls-based Initiative Foundation, following time at the U.S. Small Business Administration and work in the United States Senate.
