Senator Zaynab Mohamed’s Measure Honoring Dziedzic Passes Unanimously
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) said the Senate today unanimously approved Sen. Zaynab Mohamed’s (DFL-Minneapolis) measure to name a Minneapolis bridge in honor of the late and beloved former Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic, who passed away in late December after battling cancer.
The Senators said the 10th Avenue bridge spanning the Mississippi River, currently known as the 10th Ave. Bridge, will be designated as the “Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic Memorial Bridge.” The designation was included Thursday as part of the Senate-passed Omnibus Transportation Budget.
“It is fitting that we will name a bridge in honor of our late beloved Senator Dziedzic,” said Majority Leader Murphy. “She taught us all how to be bridge builders, peacemakers, policy makers, and progress makers, as we do the important work of the Senate. Her legacy has become a part of us all in this body, and it will continue play a role as we work on behalf of Minnesota today and into the future.”
“Minnesotans will remember Kari Dziedzic as one of the most productive, effective Senate leaders in our state’s history. And she taught many of her colleagues – including me – how to make policy, serve our constituents, govern alongside each other, and work on behalf of our communities and our entire state.” said Sen. Mohamed. “It is fitting that the project that should bear her name is a bridge. In a very real way, Kari served as bridge between Senators, between the House and Senate, and between elected officials and constituents. This bridge will commemorate for future generations her legacy of service to our state.”
“I have served alongside Kari for many years and saw firsthand not only her talents as a legislator and skills as a leader, but also her humility, her patience, her kindness and compassion for everyone she worked with,” said Senate President Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis). “The work of the Senate under her leadership was consequential and historic, and this bridge will serve a fitting tribute to how that work has improved the lives of Minnesotans and will do so for generations to come.”
“Kari was a proud Northeaster and a beloved leader of our community,” said Sen. Doron Clark (DFL-Minneapolis), who now serves in Sen. Dziedzic’s seat. “She built bridges – both at the legislature and in her personal life. This memorial will a fitting tribute to her public service, advocacy, and dedication to her constituents.”
